I was arrested for a felony but the prosecutor's office only charged me with a misdemeanor.

Police officers arrest based on the suspicion of you committing a crime. In Illinois, the county state’s attorney’s office has the final say in what charges, if any, will be filed against you stemming from the arrest. If the charging prosecutor decides to not charge you with a certain crime that does not mean you will not be charged with the crime later. Prosecutors can add charges all the way up until when the jury is impaneled. It is rare to wait that late to add charges; however, they have the authority to do so.
