I heard they always deny reinstatement at your first hearing with the Secretary of State. Shouldn’t I represent myself for the first hearing then?

No. People usually get denied at the first hearing because they are unprepared for the hearing or they do not have appropriate representation. If you have an attorney who concentrates in this area of law and properly prepares you for the hearing you will most likely get approved for driving relief whether it is your first hearing or not. You will want to be as prepared as possible because any answer you give in the first hearing that may not be truthful or believed by the hearing officer can be used against you at the second hearing.
